Day 408 marked the end of our hike through Europe. 7425 kilometers on foot; walking on beaches, through forests, along dunes, on roads, close to fields, crossing villages, towns and big cities. 12 times we crossed borders of the different European countries; 7 times on foot, 3 times by boat, 2 times by bus. We met the most wonderful people; inviting us to their homes, helping whenever needed, stopping for a chat and exchange of ideas.

Our last hiking day summarized all those beautiful experiences: On a bright and sunny day, 15 friends and family members joined us at different points along the coast between Carcavelos and downtown Lisbon. Some of them walked more than ever before in doing the full distance of 23 km, members of the running group “Tartarugas Solidárias” (solidary turtles) skipped their training to hike with us, the youngest hiker did an amazing 13 km, everybody kept the happy mood despite the burning sun. It was the perfect ending for our adventure.

A big thank you to everybody who was with us in thoughts or in person, we are privileged to know so many wonderful people!

Jan and Romi

Jan and Romi

The two people who saw us off in Tallinn almost 14 months ago, came to Portugal to hike the last five days with us.

Moiken’s brother Jan and his girlfriend Romi joined us for 87 km along the coast, on extremely challenging tracks and also easy walking ways, and made our arrival even more special.

Nuno

Nuno

Just when we thought the last days of the hike would be easy-peasy, our friend Nuno comes along and leads us through amazing trails in the Sintra hills.

The 19 km we hiked together included the most beautiful sights and the most difficult descents and ascents of our trip. To be repeated – without the backpacks!

Conny

Conny

Moiken’s cousin Conny and her family flew in especially from sunny Berlin to spend some days in and around Santiago.

Fortunately, on our 17 km hike with Conny through the beautiful hills of Galicia, we had perfect walking conditions: A bit cloudy and only some rain to cool us down in the end.

Regine 2

Regine 2

After our hiking week in Poland in September, Moiken’s mum joined us again in April – this time to hike along the Spanish coast, from Bilbao to Santander.

She impressed us by walking 108 kilometers in five days, with a lot of ups and downs!

Jorge

Jorge

José’s little brother Jorge came to France to hike one day with us, travel to Bordeaux to celebrate José’s birthday, and hike four days more (the last one being courtesy of a general strike).

We descended 109 kilometers of the coast of Gironde together, passing through pine forests and walking on long sand beaches, and of course enjoyed some good Bordeaux wine and excellent food.

Anne-Marie & Jimmy

Anne-Marie & Jimmy

To our great joy, Anne-Marie joined us a second time – and she brought her husband Jimmy along!
The four of us enjoyed two beautiful sunny days in France, suffered together when the first hike was much longer than originally planned, and celebrated our achievement of hiking a total of 50 kilometers with delicious food in the evening,

Zaki

Zaki

On the coldest weekend of our hike, Zaki drove through the night to meet us for a 16 km hike at the South England Coast the next day.
We started on icy trails going up and down in the coastal forests, enjoyed his delicious tuna sandwiches on the go, because it was too cold to sit down and rest, and finished with timid sunrays shining on the pebble beach.

Betty & Christopher

Betty & Christopher

Our friends Betty and Christopher came down to the stunning Jurassic Coast in South England to join us for one of the most challenging hikes of our trip.
Hiking 14 km on muddy paths, climbing several high cliffs with heavy storm and rain was not an easy task – good we could reward ourselves with some high quality ales afterwards!

Bart

Bart

Bart has hiked huge parts of the E9 already and has been following our adventures since the beginning, so it was a special pleasure to meet him in person and spend a hiking day together.
He drove from the South of Belgium to the coast at Nieuwpoort, from where we hiked 24 km, crossing dunes and walking on endless sand beaches.

Gigi

Gigi

While in Belgium, we received a visit from Zurich, and had a great hiking companion for 2 1/2 days. Our friend Gigi travelled to Oostende and hiked a total of 56 km with us.
We defied the wind together, discovered the Belgian coast, and even crossed the border to France!

Claude

Claude

Moiken’s colleague from Zurich came all the way to Brugge in Belgium and spent one hiking day with us, walking a total of 19 km,
We started with beautiful sunshine and ended with heavy rain, but fortunately there have been country inns on the way to keep us warm and dry.

Dutch hiking group

Dutch hiking group

We met this group of energetic ladies on our route, and as we were going the same way, we joined them for 15 km.
We had a break together in a warm café, before we walked along the Browersdam with incredibly strong wind. Nevertheless, we had never walked with such a high average speed before!

Rob

Rob

Experienced hiker and outdoor enthusiast, Rob joined us for a day of hiking from Katwijk to Den Haag, following the Dutch long distance trail LAW-5.
We started with strong headwinds and finished under pouring rain, but what remained after 22 km was a lot of new knowledge about hiking and many incredible stories.

Anne-Marie

Anne-Marie

Full of energy, Anne-Marie travelled from Zurich in Switzerland to Groningen in the Netherlands and spent four days with us.
During the 87 km we hiked together, we had fog, strong winds, sunshine, and saw a huge variety of landscapes along the Dutch coast.

Tânia

Tânia

Tânia and Jojo welcomed us in their home in Aurich, where we could relax and enjoy wonderful food. We kidnapped Tânia to walk with us for two days, one of them starting at 5 AM in total darkness. She joined us for 42 km of our hike.

Judith & Carsten

Judith & Carsten

With our good friends from Bad Homburg, Moiken’s friends since school times, we spent 3 1/2 days hiking a total of 83 km.
They crossed half of Germany to get to Stralsund, to spend time with us and see the Baltic sea. The former was easy to be arranged, but the latter only happened on the last hiking day.

Regine

Regine

Moiken’s mum travelled from Berlin to Poland to join us for 5 1/2 days of hiking, during which we walked 105 km.
We enjoyed together the beautiful coastline of Poland, historical seaside resorts, and brilliant summer weather.
